Though February was only 28 days, it was a jam-packed 28 days to tackle gender-based violence.
The Be More Than A Bystander (BMTAB) campaign, part of our Ally Program, was a success within Waterdown District High School (WDHS), thanks to our student ally team, our partners at Interval House of Hamilton and the high school.
If you had the chance to see our social media, you would have seen statistics, resources, giveaways, contests and Wear Purple Day content. We also provided teacher and parent handouts with information, frequently asked questions, an exercise to spark conversations around gender-based violence (GBV) and more. You can find a downloadable version of our parent handout on our Parent Place: http://parent.healthyouthnetwork.ca/be-more-than-a-bystander.
The art department at WDHS participated in our poster-making contest, gaining a deeper understanding of what GBV entails as they worked through the creative process. We’re thankful for our teachers engaging students in these difficult conversations, and to our student team for being such a dedicated voice in the schools about what it means to be more than a bystander.
With March upon us, we’ll be celebrating International Women’s Day by joining in to help #BreakTheBias, including showcasing WDHS student voices in a video that they’ll be producing. Watch for this online at youth.healthyouthnetwork.ca/ally-program, where you’ll also find more information about our ally program.
The team continues to grow as we bring in male allies and recruit older youth to help with the research piece. At Healthy Youth Network, we are proud of our students for showing heart, strength, vulnerability, creativity and passion toward challenging us all to #BreakTheBias.
We are also excited to announce the Flamborough Paint Challenge is returning this year. It is set for June 29. Registration opens March 23, so get your team together. Visit healthyouthnetwork.ca for more on the Flamborough Paint Challenge.
