Does the student need to come to my professional kitchen?
No! While visiting a professional kitchen is a huge “What’s Your Path” experience for the student, we will arrange for you to meet with the student at the school. This is due to school policy and legal requirements. If the student would like to visit your professional kitchen after school, please let their classroom teacher know and they can advise you.
Who covers the cost of the ingredients?
You will be expected to cover the cost of the ingredients and will be recognized as a Dough-nator (in-kind sponsor).
What about Food Safety and Health Regulations?
All professional bakers must ensure that the final product is prepared in a certified kitchen and complies with Hamilton Public Health guidelines. As Waterdown District High School is a partner and has allowed us to use the school for this event, you must ensure standard food safety protocols are followed during the bake and distribution of samples.
Am I liable if a student gets injured during the mentorship?
The students are participating as part of a school-sanctioned activity and the Healthy Youth Network’s “What’s Your Path” program, which carries its own liability insurance. If the student visits your facility during school hours, this would be organized through the classroom teacher and follow school policies and procedures.
Do I have to provide the recipe?
Nope! The “core” recipe is created by the students during their in-class competition. Your role is to act as a Creative Consultant. You’ll help them tweak the flavour profile, suggest better techniques for texture, and provide expert advice. You will be responsible for baking 200–300 cookies for the event.
Can I sell my own products at the event?
Yes! As a thank you for your mentorship, you receive a complimentary booth in our Baking Marketplace. While the “Battle” cookie is for sampling and voting, you are encouraged to bring your signature items (breads, pastries, etc.) to sell to the public. You must fill out a vendor application and adhere to all Vendor Terms & Conditions.
What happens if I can’t make the final event on April 23rd?
Since this is a student-pro pairing, your presence is a big part of the experience. However, if an emergency arises, we ask that you send a representative from your bakery (an assistant or lead baker) to stand with the student team.
This event is a great way to “test-drive” potential future employees. Many of these students are looking for co-op placements or part-time jobs, and this is the ultimate working interview!
